Guessing Subject to Distortion

چکیده
We investigate the problem of guessing a random vector X within distortion level D. Our aim is to characterize the best attainable performance in the sense of minimizing, in some probabilistic sense, the number of required guesses G(X) until the error falls below D. The underlying motivation is that G(X) is the number of candidate codewords to be examined by a rate-distortion block encoder until a satisfactory codeword is found. In particular, for memoryless sources, we provide a singleletter characterization of the least achievable exponential growth rate of the th moment of G(X) as the dimension of the random vector X grows without bound. In this context, we propose an asymptotically optimal guessing scheme that is universal both with respect to the information source and the value of . We then study some properties of the exponent function E(D; ) along with its relation to the source-coding exponents. Finally, we provide extensions of our main results to the Gaussian case, guessing with side information, and sources with memory.

Guessing and compression subject to distortion
The problem of guessing a random string is revisited. The relationship between guessing without distortion and compression is extended to the case when source alphabet size is countably infinite. Further, similar relationship is established for the case when distortion allowed by establishing a tight relationship between rate distortion codes and guessing strategies.

A standard correction for random guessing (cfg) formula on multiple-choice and Yes/Noexaminations was examined retrospectively in the scores of the intermediate female EFL learners in an English language school. The correctionwas a weighting formula for points awarded for correct answers, incorrect answers, and unanswered questions so that the expectedvalue of the increase in test score due to g...
متن کاملOn the Shannon Cipher System With a Wiretapper Guessing Subject to Distortion and Reliability Requirements
In this paper we discuss the processes in the Shannon cipher system with discrete memoryless source and a guessing wiretapper. The wiretapper observes a cryptogram of N vector of ciphered messages in the public channel and tries to guess successively the vector of messages within given distortion level ∆ and small probability of error less than exp{−NE} with positive reliability index E. The se...
متن کاملJoint Source-Channel Coding and Guessing with Application to Sequential Decoding
We extend our earlier work on guessing subject to distortion to the joint source-channel coding context. We consider a system in which there is a source connected to a destination via a channel and the goal is to reconstruct the source output at the destination within a prescribed distortion level with respect to (w.r.t.) some distortion measure. The decoder is a guessing decoder in the sense t...
متن کاملHierarchical Guessing with a Fidelity Criterion
In an earlier paper, we studied the problem of guessing a random vector X within distortion D, and characterized the best attainable exponent E(D; ) of the th moment of the number of required guesses G(X) until the guessing error falls below D. In this paper, we extend these results to a multi-stage, hierarchical guessing model, which allows for a faster search of a codeword vector at the encod...
